The Magician’s Elephant is an animated fantasy adventure film directed by Wendy Rogers, based on Kate DiCamillo’s 2009 novel of the same name. The story follows Peter, a young orphan in the war-torn city of Baltese, on a quest to find his long-lost sister, Adele.

In the city of Baltese, shrouded in perpetual clouds after a devastating war, young Peter lives under the guardianship of Vilna Lutz, a stern former soldier who saved Peter from the battlefield. Vilna trains Peter rigorously, preparing him for future conflicts, and insists that Peter’s sister, Adele, died at birth a claim masking his guilt over losing her during the chaos of war.

One day, while on an errand, Peter encounters a fortune teller who reveals that Adele is alive and that an elephant will lead him to her. Skeptical yet hopeful, Peter is intrigued by this prophecy.

Coincidentally, a magician’s performance in Baltese goes awry when, instead of conjuring lilies, he accidentally summons an elephant, causing chaos and injuring a noblewoman named Madam LaVaughn. The magician is imprisoned, and the elephant is confined, becoming a symbol of wonder and hopes in the somber city.

Determined to follow the fortune teller’s guidance, Peter seeks to free the elephant, believing it will lead him to Adele. He petitions the king, who, amused by Peter’s resolve, assigns him three seemingly impossible tasks to earn the elephant’s freedom: defeat a renowned soldier, fly, and make the reclusive Countess laugh.

With the help of his neighbour, Leo Matienne, and Leo’s wife, Gloria, Peter embarks on these challenges. He returns a stolen storybook to the formidable soldier, winning his favour; he glides through the air using a parachute-like device, simulating flight; and, during an audience with the Countess, the elephant sneezes on the king, prompting the Countess to laugh for the first time since her brother’s death.

Having completed the tasks, Peter is granted custody of the elephant. However, he realizes that the elephant belongs in its natural habitat. The magician, now redeemed and with the townspeople’s support, uses his restored confidence to send the elephant back home.

Meanwhile, Adele, raised by Sister Marie after being separated from Peter during the war, dreams of an elephant leading her to her brother. Their paths cross unknowingly during Peter’s quest, but they finally recognize each other after the elephant’s departure. The reunion brings joy to Baltese, symbolizing the return of hope and light to the once-gloomy city.
