“AYINLA” was a beautiful simple Nigerian movie released in the cinema in June about the true life story of a great Apalla Maestro musician, “Ayinla Omowura” , the movie was shot in Abeokuta and transcribed in the Yoruba dilate, but was translated in English. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect as I wasn’t one who was keen on Yoruba movies, but I went in with an open mind and I am glad I did.
I learnt a huge lesson from his short life which is “You must never let anger control you, because it can cut your life short and destroy your destiny”. He could have lived longer only if he had being able to control his pride and temper.
The entire movie was centered on the life of Ayinla’s life; they showed us how he loved his numerous wives and kids and took very good care of them all. He was good, kind and generous to all and whenever he entered a bar, he would buy food and drinks for everyone present as much as they could eat and drink. Everyone loved him and his music.
Despite the fact that he had many wives already, he still could not see a fine lady and take his eyes off. After all, he had so much money to take care of them all. He had a learned manager who was stealing from him, but they still worked together till a very pretty young lady came in between their relationship and destroyed it. She insisted she was going to accompany them to London for the music tour despite the manager rejecting. Ayinla liked her and was willing to carry her along whether the manager liked it or not. This was the root cause of all issues. All efforts by the band to resolved this problem proved abortive as the quarrel between them because of this lady couldn’t be resolved, till it tore the band apart.
Well, you would need to watch the entire movie to see how one selfish, greedy lady destroyed the entire destiny of a great man, who changed the music industry for good in his time. Till now, his music and legacy lives on.

To my verdict I would award this movie a 7/10. It is a movie based on a true life story of a great man, a drama- musical movie, I wasn’t so sure what to expect but on the long run, I got to like the movie and lessons learnt. They did try to really take us back to the oldies and they did a very good job leaving the story, which reminded me a lot about the movie called “76”. The entire lesson from his life was at the very end, so make sure you wait till the very end, at that point you will see how deep the movie was and how pride and anger could coast you everything, even your life. If you love musical movies in Yoruba then this might be your movie.
